This site was originally developed as a means of communication between the members of the 1958 Westminster Shiant Isles Expedition, who met again in 1999.  However, we have found that friends and family invited to visit the site have found it interesting, so this page has been added to give those people a bit of background.

In 1958, eight pupils of Westminster School visited the Shiant Isles, which are three uninhabited islands in the Minch, between the Inner and Outer Hebrides off North West Scotland.   They are about 20 miles (32 Km) south of Stornoway and 12 miles (20 Km) north of the northern tip of Skye.   We arrived on 13 August 1958 and stayed until 12 September 1958.  The members of the expedition, who were all between the ages of 16 and 19, were:

Adrian Phillips Martin Richards
Mischa Scorer David Devereux
Roger Martin Alan Trist
John Hole Tim Lodge

Sadly, David Devereux died in about 1988, but the rest of us, with the exception of Alan Trist who lives in California, met up again for dinner in London in November 1999. Adam Nicolson joined us when we met again in November 2000, and Alan Trist finally caught up with some of us for lunch in September 2001.   We resolved to visit the islands again before we collected our bus passes, and John, Martin, Roger, and Tim, together with Martin's son Casey and Tim's sons Rupert and Tom, stayed on the islands from 28 June to 1 July 2002. A brief report and some photos of the 2002 visit are here.

For an account of our stay in the islands in 1958, you can read our Report, an article which Mischa Scorer wrote for the school magazine soon after our visit, or John Hole's Diary:
