Map of the Shiant Isles

Welcome to the Home Page of the Old Westminster Shiant Isles Expedition 2002!

For a month from 15th August 1958, eight pupils of Westminster School visited the Shiant Isles, which are three uninhabited islands in the Minch, between the Inner and Outer Hebrides off North West Scotland.   They are about 20 miles (32 Km) south of Stornoway and 12 miles (20 Km) north of the northern tip of Skye.   After 44 years, four of the original eight members of the 1958 expedition revisited the islands with three of their grown-up sons in June 2002.

NEW! Four members of the 1958 expedition, with three of their sons, visited the islands again from 28 June to 1 July 2002. A report and photos are here.

For the increasing number of people who visit these pages for the first time, there is now a page of background information on the WSIE 1958, including the 1958 Report, an article by Mischa Scorer and John Hole's diary.

See Adam Nicolson's web site, in support of his new book Sea Room, at http://www.shiantisles.net.

For those of you looking for a little solitude, expedition member John Hole has a magic mountain cottage, Cyfannedd Fach, available to rent in mid-Wales.

Thanks to John Hole and Mischa Scorer, we have lots of photos of the 1958 expedition.   More photos added on 29 Oct 2000.

Here's a link to some great photographs of the islands, taken by Charles Tait of Orkney, who visited by yacht.

We also have the Visitors Book from the islands for 1958, thanks to Adam Nicolson.   You might recognise some of the names, even if the handwriting has changed!

You can read the archive of email we have sent to each other.
